Balboa Park is the cultural heart of San Diego — a vast, beautiful 1,200-acre park packed with museums, gardens, performing-arts venues, ornate Spanish Colonial architecture, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. There's far more here than you can see in a day, so a little planning helps. Here's how to approach it.
The San Diego Zoo. The park's biggest draw, and a full day on its own. One of the most renowned zoos in the world, it's known for naturalistic habitats, a leading conservation mission, thousands of animals, and a lush botanical setting. The grounds are large and hilly, so use the guided bus tour for an overview and the Skyfari aerial tram to cross the park and rest. Arrive at opening for cooler temperatures and active animals. (Note the separate Safari Park inland is a different attraction.) Most visitors dedicate a whole day to the zoo alone.
The museums. Balboa Park holds more than a dozen museums, so choose by interest. For families and science: the Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the San Diego Air & Space Museum are standouts. For art and culture: the San Diego Museum of Art, the Mingei International Museum (folk art and design), the Museum of Us (anthropology), and the Photographic Arts museum. The Model Railroad Museum is a quirky favorite. Individual museums charge admission; a multi-museum pass (the Explorer pass) can be good value if you'll visit several.
The grounds, gardens, and architecture. The park itself is free and gorgeous. Stroll El Prado, the central promenade lined with ornate Spanish Colonial Revival buildings from the 1915-16 exposition. Visit the lath-walled Botanical Building and lily ponds, the rose and desert gardens, the Spanish Village Art Center (a working artists' colony), and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion (free concerts on certain days). The Old Globe Theatre stages excellent productions. Simply wandering is one of the best free things to do in the city.
Planning your time. Given the scale, decide your focus. A classic approach: dedicate one full day to the zoo, and a separate half- or full-day to the park's museums, gardens, and architecture. If you only have one day, choose either the zoo or a museum-and-grounds day — trying to do both well in a single day is a stretch. A free park tram connects the main areas. Wear comfortable shoes, and consider a multi-museum pass if museums are your focus.
